Frequently Asked Questions About Our Honey Production

1. At what age can children eat honey? Honey is not safe for children under the age of 1 year. It may contain spores of Clostridium botulinum, which can cause infant botulism, a rare but serious illness. After 12 months of age, the digestive systems of most children are developed enough to handle honey safely.

2. Is honey healthy? Honey is a natural sweetener that contains small amounts of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and can be soothing for a sore throat. However, it is still high in sugar and calories, so it should be consumed in moderation.

3. Is honey vegan?  Honey is not considered vegan by most definitions because it is produced by bees, and harvesting honey involves using animal labor. Vegans typically avoid all products derived from animals or insects, including honey.

4. Does honey production hurt bees? When honey is harvested ethically, it does not harm bees

5. How is honey made? Honey is made by bees collecting nectar from flowers, which they store in their stomachs and later deposit into the honeycomb. The bees fan the nectar with their wings to evaporate excess water, turning it into honey. Enzymes in the bees’ saliva also help to break down the sugars in the nectar.

7. Are there different types of honey? Yes, there are many types of honey, categorized by the flowers from which the nectar is collected. Popular varieties include clover, manuka, acacia, and wildflower honey. The flavor, color, and nutritional content can vary significantly depending on the type.

8. Can honey spoil? Honey does not spoil if stored properly. Its low moisture content and acidic pH inhibit bacterial growth, making it one of the longest-lasting foods. Over time, honey may crystallize, but this is a natural process and does not mean it has gone bad. You can gently warm it to return it to its liquid state.
